Creating homes for victims of domestic violence
In the spring of 2018, I launched a new outreach program dedicated to helping individuals and families leaving Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS). After working in the interior design field for so long, I wanted a way to give back to my community in a meaningful way. Hoping to find a program where I could just volunteer my time, I reached out to DVIS. No program existed that helped these families transition out of the shelter and into their new lives. Without hesitation, I jumped at the opportunity. The majority of the families leave their home at a moments notice, most come to the shelter with the clothes on their back and children in tow. When life has settled and they are ready to transition back into the community and start a fresh life, they leave with only what they had in hand, no bed, no blanket, not even pillows. My goal was to change that. I want to give each of these individuals and families everything they need to make their house a home. A fresh start, a place of joy, a place to feel safe. One mom living in the transitional housing told me her greatest fear was leaving the safety and security of the shelter and having her kids feel like they were homeless. Just the overwhelming obstacles of finding housing, then topping that with finding beds, furniture, kitchen items and the small things needed to make life livable was more than she could think about. She and her kids have overcome so much, she couldn’t bare the thought of these stresses undoing all that they have accomplished to get to this point in their lives. So many smiles, tears of joy I have seen from the 34 families we have helped this past 12 months. It’s hard work, but worth so much. Since Furnishing New Beginnings relies solely on donated goods, we frequently reach out into our local community for donations. Our ability to provide for these families is purely dependent on items our community can donate. The more we receive, the more we can bless them. Thankfully, I have the help of a strong group of women, Pandemonium Cycling and my teenage boys! I couldn’t do this work without all the people behind me.
